Saturday Drinking Thread: Hurricane Beers Edition

I have been experimenting the past couple weekends with these kind of posts. A mix of live-blog, drinking forecasting and buzzed journaling. Even though it hasn’t taken off yet, I kinda like doing them so I’ll keep it up for now.

We give so much of our writing and energy to posting on other peoples sites (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Untappd bla bla bla…), sometimes it’s nice to keep that energy on your own blog, ya know?

I will be updating this blog post throughout the day (when time allows) so just check back in occasionally by hitting refresh on your browser when you have the post pulled up. Comments are open to you as well if you ever feel the need to ad something.

TODAY’S DRINKING FORECAST

  • High chance of buzz rolling in by afternoon as no events outside of the house are planned. No need to drive anywhere once errands are done and no serious family needs predicted at this time.
  • Just enough beer budget today to supply a full Saturday of drinking.
  • Events to watch: Hurricane Ida approach Gulf states. Oakland A’s game vs. Yanks. Fresno State Football season opening game. New episode of Ted Lasso. SNL repeat at 11:30 PM.

Ambiant Review: Tioga Sequoia “Bridalveil Lager”

The beer subject: Bridalveil Lager

I am not okay with giving straight reviews of beers. Either reviewing beer bores me or I simply suck at it, or both.

So this is the closest I can come to a beer review. In the roughly 20 minutes it took to drink this, these are some thoughts and things.

BEER DETAILS:

  • Name: Bridalveil Lager.
  • Brewer: Tioga Sequoia (Fresno,CA).
  • Style: American Lager.
  • ABV: 4.5%

THOUGHTS & SETTING:

  • 3:50PM. Fresno. On my patio at a table in my backyard. 94 degrees.
  • Music: “Citizen Erased” by Muse plays in the background.
  • Woah. This beer is easy to drink – I mean that in a good way.
  • I wonder how many people know that Bridalveil Falls is in Yosemite – that can be a very dangerous hike up that trail, super slick.
  • Oh hey, a little breeze. Maybe a 10mph gust.
  • Is Muse an underrated band or are they rated properly and I just haven’t paid attention?
  • Someone odd parked across the street. [inspects]. It appears to be someone looking at the house to rent it.
  • A neighbor with their patio on the other side of the fence from my patio, has come outside. She is arguing with her boyfriend whom is still inside. She is yelling back at him things, I can’t help but overhear. The fight seems to be about a friend of his who is a woman and he was defending her. My neighbor is not okay with the amount of positive talking he is doing about this friend.
  • This is a solid Lager. As crisp as the sky is blue right now.

How To Drink Beer In The Morning [and stay present all day]

I didn’t mean for this to be an experiment but it turned out to be.

On Friday The Perfect Pour celebrated its 400th episode. We all took the day off work so we could podcast live, on the same day the show gets released.

Originally the plan was to do it at 6AM since that’s the time we jokingly claim we record. We ended up landing on 10AM. 

We would start drinking beer at TEN IN THE FREAKING MORNING.

That’s fine if you have nothing to do the rest of the day, but I had some things.

  • A kid in the house doing virtual learning all day with a lot of homework to catch up on.
  • A podcast to edit.
  • Support for my wife going to get her second vaccination shot and wanting to be able to drive her home in case it makes her feel funny.
  • Dinner.
  • A newsletter to write.

Point is, enough going on for the need to be alert (not drunk or sleepy) the rest of the day.

BUT, I wanted to drink the same amount of beer I always do on the show, regardless of time.

Well the day is nearly done and I’m here to tell you, I did it. I made it through the day with all things accomplished.

But how did I do it? I feel the need to pass on this sort of Day Drinking Guide to you – just in case you need to drink beer in the morning sometime and still have a productive day.

Start with a good base. A good setup.

That usually means a strong breakfast. A thick one. I did not though. I had a piece of cheese, a piece of sourdough bread and three cups of coffee. That’s a bad base.

10:00AM

The podcast begins, as I drink three 16oz beers all the way down. That was about three hours tops. The beers (along with my neighbor’s cat) are pictured above.

  • Core Values from Coronado Brewing & Karl Strauss. Apple WCIPA, 6.8% ABV.
  • All Good from Loomis Basin Brewing. HIPA, 7.2% ABV.
  • Wakey Wakey from New Glory Brewing. Oatmeal Coffee Porter at 6.5%.

12:30PM

The podcast is over. I have a meat heavy pizza from Pieology.

Water. Diet soda. Another water. Another diet soda. Crackers.

3:00PM

I’m basically sober. The buzz from the morning beers is gone. Just slightly tired.

It’s time for the vax backup, but it turns out I’m not needed.

3:30PM

I could start drinking again but don’t. I know I need to stay awake to write, help with school and stay fresh for diner. Be a human and stuff.

5:30PM

Pick up diner. Chinese from China Bistro (it’s a takeout kinda day).

I have more water and soda with my Mongolian Beef and fried rice.

I’m fully reset and ready for beers again, almost as if I had not drank earlier.

7:30PM

  • Amarilla Gorilla from Smog City Brewing. IPA, 7.4%.
  • Soft & Fluffy from Temblor Brewing. Marshmallow IPA. 8.0%.

11:30PM

I hit the wall. Normally I would have had another beer at this point but no interest now and can’t stay awake.

It’s over, but mission accomplished. 

Significant morning drinking and a full day of being present, can be accomplished.

Good Beers To Drink Outside

It’s the time to be outside and popular beer writer, @BeerBabe, put out a question to Beer Twitter recently:

What’s a good day drinking, patio or simply outdoors beer? Hmmmm.

My first reaction is almost always, light. A pale ale around 5% or a session IPA.

This is the only time (outside, during the day), when I would think about having a Lager or Pilsner as well. Maybe even a good European Lager.

Day drinking is glorious. Except when it’s not. Here are five tips on how to day-drink with beer

So, you want to know how to day drink? I got you.

Day drinking does not always have to end badly. If you’re smart about it and have a plan, you can have a delicious pale ale in front of you all day and still make it to the next day just as fresh as those boring-ass sober people.

Even if you day-drink alone, you can come out ahead.

Make a plan and you’ll have a good, fun day and a better next morning. Here is what has worked for me.

1. Start Small

Obvious I know but not everyone does this. You got to start the day with a low ABV beer. Whether you begin your drinking day in the morning with some sort of coffee stout (shout out to Modern Time’s “Blackhouse”), or at noon with a Kolsch or pale, pick a low alcohol percentage.

If you don’t start slow, you’ll be trying to correct it the rest of the day and it will use up too much sobering energy.

2. Stay Hydrated

Water. Always have a water sitting there with you. This is probably the number one tip overall. If you have a glass of water with every beer you drink it will go a long way towards keeping your day going and your wits about you.

I like to mix in caffeine too, about every other drink. There are times of the day when I have a water, a beer and caffeine all going at once.

Here is a rough order I try to stick by:

  • Beer
  • Water
  • Caffeine.
  • Beer.
  • Water.
  • Beer.
  • Caffeine.
  • Beer.
  • Water.
  • Beer.
  • Beer.
  • Water.
  • Bed.

As you can see, there is some work involved and a lot of liquid. Which reminds me, don’t forget to mix in:

3. Food. Eat Some

You must eat like always. Not like you were not going to, of course, but some of us get super bloated and may skip a meal. Don’t. Maybe throw a salad in there too.

Actually, here are some of the best food items to enjoy that help prevent day drinking issues.

  • Pickles
  • Avacado dip
  • A burger
  • Nuts
  • Spinach
  • 1% Milk

4. Take Breaks But Don’t Stop

Maybe you slow down about midway through your day. That is fine and probably a good idea. But don’t take too long a break. If you do, your body will start sobering up and realizing what a mistake this day has been. Don’t let it. Wait until the end of the day or tomorrow morning for your body to remind you that you’re an idiot.

5. Be Nice To Everyone

Are you mentally in a good place right now? Are you a fun drunk? If you are and you stick to this plan, you and everyone around you can have fun. In fact, you may not ever really get drunk.

As proof of this method’s effectiveness, I followed this to the letter on Opening Day of baseball this year and made it all the way to 11 that night – I started drinking at 10 am.

Not only that, I was a delight to everyone all day! Ask anybody. Well, at least I think so. Nobody got openly mad at me, at least.

Nothing ends your previously fun day of drinking quicker than being surly. Nobody wants to deal with you and people close to you will try and shut your day down. And that sucks because you had all those delicious beers left to drink!
